Improving the sensitivity and reliability of olfactory detection

Olfactory detection ports (ODPs) enable odour characteristics to be associated with particular compounds, by taking advantage of the human nose – with its extraordinary sensitivity and selectivity – to record analytes as they elute from a GC column. As a result, ODPs have become a vital tool across food & beverage, fragrance and material emissions applications.

However, many odour-active compounds are also sensitive to heat, meaning they can degrade in the heated transfer line of the ODP, leading to poor sensitivity and potential misidentification of odours.

The Phaser Pro ODP overcomes this challenge by using a temperature-programmable transfer line, allowing it to be programmed with the same temperature ramps as the GC oven. This prevents degradation of thermally-labile compounds, providing improved sensitivity and more accurate odour evaluation.

Key features of the Phaser Pro

  • Temperature-programmable transfer line means no degradation of thermally labile compounds, for improved sensitivity and more accurate odour evaluation.

  • Constant split ratio between the Phaser Pro and any other configured detector, for robust quantitative analysis.

  • No cold spots in the transfer line means more efficient detection of high-boiling compounds.

  • Air purge humidifier protects nasal mucosa against drying.

  • Compact and easy to install on any GC instrument.

  • 'Aroma Palette’ interface for simple one-click registering of odour characteristics.

  • ‘Olfactory Voicegram’ software allows clicks, audio recordings and responses on the Aroma Palette to be added to the chromatogram.

  • GCxGC compatibility (using the INSIGHT® flow modulator) enhances separation of complex aroma profiles.

  • Sample enrichment option (using the Centri® platform) improves detectability of trace odorants.

Configuration of the Phaser Pro: After GC separation, the sample is split between a detector (e.g. a mass spectrometer) and the Phaser Pro ODP, which allows compounds to be ‘sniffed’ and their odour characteristics recorded.
