GC–MS Applications Engineer
Reports To: Head of SepSolve Product Group
Location: Peterborough, UK
The GC–MS Applications Engineer will play a pivotal role in developing, optimising, and evaluating analytical applications that showcase the capabilities of SepSolve’s instrumentation and software across diverse markets. This role places a strong emphasis on applications development to address customer challenges and highlight the competitive advantages of our solutions.
Description
The GC–MS Applications Engineer will play a key role at SepSolve, with opportunities for growth and professional development. This challenging and interesting role involves, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and optimisation of analytical methods to showcase the capabilities of SepSolve’s GC–MS instrumentation and software across diverse applications and markets.
- Collaborate with clients to design and implement tailored application solutions, ensuring alignment with their specific requirements and timelines.
- Prepare and deliver customer reports, application notes, SOPs, presentations, and technical documentation to support application promotion, delivery, and method handover training, meeting agreed quality and timelines.
- Analyse client standards and samples in real-world matrices to validate method performance, addressing key criteria such as detection limits, carry-over, calibration, reproducibility, and analyte recovery.
- Maintain expertise in all technical aspects of the product portfolio to support sales and distribution channels in closing orders.
- Organise, prepare, and deliver software demonstrations and training for prospective clients, existing users, and internal staff.
- Provide prompt client support via phone, email, web meetings, or site visits to ensure seamless operation and build client confidence.
Additional Responsibilities (when relevant experience / training is achieved – based on business need):
- Conduct on-site installation, method setup, training, and performance validation following solution sales, ensuring client satisfaction and sign-off.
- Manage the laboratory by maintaining supplies, ensuring cleanliness and safety, and adhering to industry H&S guidelines.
- Support marketing efforts by generating data and reports to promote instrumentation and software for various applications.
- Attend seminars, conferences, and client meetings to present and promote application solutions, and assist in client workshops for method demonstrations and training.

Candidate specification
The successful candidate will:
- Hold a degree (or equivalent) in analytical chemistry or a related field, with 2+ years of experience in GC-MS, sample introduction, and sample preparation.
- Have experience in application development and be meticulous in documenting the process.
- Have hands-on experience in running and developing analytical methods using GC–MS and, ideally, experience of operating/maintaining at least some of the following techniques: GC, GC×GC, GC–MS, GC–TOFMS, SPE, LLE, solvent concentration, liquid injection, large volume injection, SBSE, SPME, HS, P&T, TD, and Dynamic HS.
- Be skilled in both quantitative and qualitative analysis workflows with GC–MS data processing software, with experience in GC×GC software a plus. Knowledge of post-analysis software for chemometrics and statistics is a distinct advantage.
- Demonstrate the ability to explain complex systems or processes clearly and concisely.
- Be willing to travel globally for product installation, maintenance, method setup, and training at client sites.
- Possess strong project management skills, with the ability to work independently and take initiative to develop and complete projects on time. A professional, client-friendly demeanor and ability to work as part of a growing team are essential.
