Fast analysis of semi-volatile organic compounds using PTV-GC–TOF MS
This study demonstrates the improvements in efficiency and sensitivity that can be achieved by using programmed temperature vaporisation (PTV) with GC and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF MS) for the analysis of semi-volatile organic compounds relevant to environmental monitoring.
A key feature of the work was the optimisation of the inlet temperature ramp, which ensured that volatile, thermally labile and semi-volatile species were well-resolved. Combined with the high sensitivity and NIST-quality spectra of the TOF MS detector, the result was excellent separation and confident identification of the 75-component mix of SVOCs specified in US EPA Method 8270, in under 16 minutes (see above). Similar results were also obtained when the mix was supplemented with PCBs and OCPs.
